Leonidas Kavakos came to the end of a two-week residency with the National Symphony Orchestra by showing a third facet of his musical personality. After shining as a soloist in Sibelius’s violin concerto last week, he gave what was reportedly an excellent solo recital earlier this week with Christoph Eschenbach at the piano. Kavakos has recorded the original version of the Sibelius concerto and I actually like it better than the revised version. Why he ever decided to revise it is something i do not understand. The revised version sounds a lot more Sibeliusish but perhaps it's because we are so used to hearing it that way.
